Hallett Cove Ocean Pool is the first of its kind in Australia, combining coastal protection works with community amenity. Following studies undertaken by the council, community groups lobbied for an ocean pool to be included in the proposed works to stabilise the dune. Council subsequently engaged a design team led by Nicole Larkin to develop a concept design for the proposed pool.
The team presented two options which the community then provided feedback on. Both included a lap pool, recreational and rehabilitation swim areas and a children’s pool. The designs also featured an infinity edge which provided an uninterrupted visual link with the water out to sea. The design team gave input across multiple technical aspects of the design including coastal engineering, hydraulic engineering, stormwater diversion, ongoing maintenance, water quality, water safety, cost estimates and pump systems.
At its General Council meeting on the 13 June 2023 the City of Marion successfully endorsed the concept plans for a seaside pool at Hallett Cove. Going forward the project will seek further funding partners to continue into detailed design and approvals.
