THE WILD EDGE

The Illawarra region is locally known as the ‘coal coast’ due to its rich history in coal mining and maritime industry. Many of the ocean pools in this area are the legacy of miners who populated these coastal communities over time. The broad rock platforms along the headlands and beaches were excavated using explosives to create protected swimming enclosures. These pools continue to be well valued by the local communities and part of an iconic stretch of NSW’s coastline.
